Statement on NYC DOE Decision

Gifted New York State (www.GiftedNYS.org) maintains that the decision to end New York City’s gifted programs is a disservice to its students and the broader community.  We also believe the status quo in New York City is neither adequate nor acceptable. Best practices in gifted identification, programming, and accountability must be adopted to ensure that populations that are currently under-represented and/or under-served have access to quality and appropriately-leveled education opportunities.

The lack of such appropriate opportunities spans the entire state of New York.  New York State is one of only 8 states that does not mandate identification or services nor provides any state funding for gifted education opportunities.  At GiftedNYS, we insist that opportunities such as acceleration, talent development, enrichment, and access to effectively trained educators, administrators, and related service providers are a necessity in every zip code and school district in New York State.
