Our September newsletter highlights STEM as an area for gifted and 2e learners and their teachers to explore and expand learning in and out of the classroom. Join us for a 4-session, online class targeted for parents and caregivers (but all are welcome) to learn how mindfulness practices can help strengthen your regulation skills and build a healthier relationship with life’s stressors. Participants will explore how adopting key habits and practices of mindfulness can build the ability to stay regulated and find your way to calm presence as a caregiver.

STEM Highlight: Invention Convention, NY
|

As a NYS-certified elementary and special ed teacher, and a public- and home-schooling mother of a twice exceptional child, I found that the science fair was a space where our son thrived in his precollegiate education. With limited options in our school system, project based learning through the science fair could be incorporated into almost every aspect of his studies. He could use his strengths, expand his tool sets, adapt to challenges, and explore.
|
Educators, parents and advocates for gifted and twice exceptional learners are always seeking ways to engage the wide-ranging imaginations of the children and teens in our lives, and fortunately many more opportunities exist now for students to explore STEM education as part of school curriculum, as well as through outside organizations. Invention Convention New York (IC-NY) is a fantastic opportunity and resource accessible to students in grades K-12, where students are encouraged to use their potential to recognize needs, invent solutions and bring those solutions into the world where they can make a difference.

What is Invention Convention? Think “Shark Tank for Kids” and you will get the idea. Students will…
|
- Identify a problem in their own life or the lives of others.
- Imagine ways to solve the problem or improve the situation.
- Consult with people in their lives about those problems and their ideas.
- Make simple models.
- Create a marketing plan and pitch.
- Share the story of their invention.
To get started, you can access information, resources and tools through the Henry Ford in Dearborn Michigan - home of Invention Convention Worldwide.

- inHub provides free access to their compendium of curriculum resources and Kahoot! games.
- Find an array of videos of virtual field trips with current and past innovators and inventors.
- Encourage students to sign up for Youth Inventor Connects with access to a free story map and virtual mentoring for any student who wishes to invent.
In addition, many valuable resources are available through Invention Connection NY including:

- Free professional development to help add innovation, invention and entrepreneurial learning for homeschoolers, parents, classroom teachers, librarians, and youth leaders of afterschool programs
- Live or virtual workshops introducing “invention think” to program participants;
- Virtual preliminaries for the statewide Invention Convention New York competition in Albany in April
- Direct routes for selected State Finalists from the local and regional STEM fairs, Project Lead the Way classes and youth organizations, all of whom register with IC-NY in advance.

Thinkering Collective: New York Inspired
NY Inspired is a movement empowering K-12 educators throughout New York State to design projects that transform learning, build community, and spark real-world change. They offer a 10-week cohort experience designed specifically for K-12 educators across New York State.
|
What do we love about it?

We love that this program is based in NY and focuses on both project driven learning and community. Fellows work alongside peers, mentors, and community leaders to develop capstone projects with real-world impact, rooted in the unique energy, culture, and challenges of New York communities.
