An inclusive community advocating for learners with gifted education needs, their families, and educators

Hello GiftedNYS Community,

The Changemakers at GiftedNYS bring decades of advocacy work to the organization. We know from personal and professional experience the efforts it takes to have your voice heard.

The heart of the advocacy process consists of collaboration and communication; building a working partnership across education professionals, families, organizations and being able to effectively communicate and prepare an advocacy plan whether at the local or state level. Advocacy may be done on an individual or group basis; the processes are similar. It takes time and it requires building and strengthening relationships.

The language we choose to use is essential in building relationships that lead to collaboration. When advocating using phrases like, “How can we work together to…, what do you suggest to address…, what can I do to support…” are small statements that send big messages.

Whether it’s to make a difference for one child or to create larger, systemic change, the same principle holds true: collaboration and communication are key.

On April 18th, GiftedNYS will be hosting its 2nd Annual State of the State on gifted education in New York. We invite you to learn more about our advocacy process, key current and proposed legislation, and how you can get involved.

Read on to register for the State of the State and learn about other exciting opportunities across New York. With this edition of our newsletter, we're also excited to introduce The Pulse, a new feature. We'll share and highlight gems that have captured our attention. It might be a book, a movie, a podcast - or who knows what! We sincerely hope that you enjoy our inaugural spotlight as much as we enjoyed discovering it.

Warmly,
The GiftedNYS Team

Advocacy Corner

GiftedNYS follows the New York State General Assembly’s legislative session to monitor progress on new bills that support gifted and twice exceptional learners, broaden access to high end learning opportunities, support teacher training, and foster transparency for families. We also analyze existing legislation to recommend changes necessary in support and inclusion of gifted and twice exceptional learners.

We're excited to share our findings for the 2024 legislative season in our 2nd annual State of the State of gifted education in New York.
