An inclusive community advocating for learners with gifted education needs, their families, and educators

Hello GiftedNYS Community,

2023 was a busy year at GiftedNYS! We held several community meet-ups and a variety of informational sessions related to gifted education in New York State. We're keeping that energy going in 2024 with exciting ventures made possible by new wonderful and creative volunteers, beginning with the launch of our newsletter. We look forward to our newsletter serving as another way for our members to stay informed and connected.

Speaking of which, our membership grew by 58% in 2023! We are grateful that each of you are here and thank you for making the work of GiftedNYS possible through your membership and donations.

In addition to all of your support, GiftedNYS extends special gratitude to Three Village Schools-Advocates for Gifted Education (3VSAGE) for their donation to GiftedNYS. Their generosity will fund important projects this year and beyond. Thank you!

Advocacy Corner

In June 2023, members of the GiftedNYS leadership and advocacy committees are grateful to have had an introductory meeting with NYS Senator Mayer, Chair of the Senate Committee on Education. As a result of that meeting and at Senator Mayer's request, GiftedNYS prepared recommendations for practical steps towards better meeting the needs of New York's students with gifted education needs.
In January 2024, representatives from GiftedNYS had the opportunity to again meet with Senator Mayer and share those recommendations. Within the context of limited funding and best practices in the field of gifted education, recommendations focused no or low cost changes and equitable changes to the existing Article 90, Gifted Education, Education (EDN) Chapter 16, Title 6,

GiftedNYS recommends amendments which would have a large and equitable impact across New York, including:
  • Provision of guidance and resources to school districts aimed at improving the understanding of and meeting the social-emotional needs of diverse gifted pupils
  • Inclusion of gifted students with disability in the defining criteria of "gifted pupils"
  • Inclusion of creativity as a defining criteria of "gifted pupils"
  • Inclusion of parents/guardians of pupils identified as gifted in the decision of said child's placement and programming, including acceleration
  • Instituting a statewide advisory council on the education of gifted pupils be instituted.
These recommendations were well received by Senator Mayer's office. GiftedNYS will collaborate and advocate on behalf of New York's students in order to support changes to the existing legislation.

Stay tuned for updates, how you can get involved, and advocacy opportunities in future newsletters.
